On top of that, Sidekick creatures aren't significantly stepped-down in number of features. But I know those things for the core classes because of familiarity. I couldn't remember which of the rogue features Expert received, or whether the Spellcaster was on a 1/2 or 1/3 progression without checking. I can add core classes and even subclasses to a creature without cracking open the PHB, but I have to consult Tasha's to use Sidekicks at all.

I was excited by the idea of a streamlined, less-than-class-level alternative.īut the Sidekick rules are just new classes with fewer choices. I'd used many NPCs with class levels, and monsters with class levels, and pets that gain Feats sometimes. I'd been playing 5e for years when Sidekicks came out. If I were trying to get someone new into an ongoing game and they weren't sure they wanted to play, I might hand them a sidekick, and if it was someone who was doing a guest appearance in the game Id 100% go that route. But one of the nice things is the players, if you do it right, will start to think about equipping them, meaning they may give some of their magic items to sidekicks, which is a neat thing to have happen. It is good to assume that they are almost an extra party member when making encounters as they do add to the action economy. In combat I'll often give players control of them mechanically if I've got enough to handle, and they work well without being able to do anything too spectacular on their own. They work super well as an add-on to the party that you have some control over as DM. One of the sidekicks in my player's party is a healer spellcaster and the other is a blink-dog warrior. Two of my players have had sidekicks almost since they released with the essentials kit prior even to Tasha's (effectively from session 2 of the game on), and I've used the sidekick template to make or enhance NPCs (both allies and enemies) that improve alongside the party. Do you like them? Have any of your players played a sidekick from character creation, what was it like? Do you like them okay at the table?
